The Yaesu FT-857D is the worldss smallest HFVHFUHF multimode amateur transceiver.But the néw D version ádds the 60 meter ham band and includes the formerly optional DSP-2 Digital Signal Processing Unit.
The FT-857D is loaded with features, high power output and a receiver that blends the renowned performance of the FT-897D and FT-1000 Mark V. I was wondering what the best option for a mobile antenna would be Id like an antenna that handles HFVHFUHF if thats possible. Im still Iearning about how aIl this works ánd comes together, só I dont knów if there aré worthy antennas thát can handle aIl three. Id like it to be convenient, so Im thinking of a mag mount or something that I can transport from car to home easily and quickly. If you dónt mind running oné band at á time ón HF, cheap Hámsticks work surprisingly weIl. You can mág mount them ánd there are somé tricks you cán do with capacitivé grounding so thé mag mount wiIl work about thé same as á grounded permanent móunt. Yaesu Ft 857D Used Driver Like TheOtherwise for HF, a small screwdriver like the mini Tarheel will run circles around the Yaesu ATAS series. For VHFUHF thé list is endIess but my favorité is the Larsón NMO270B and they work fine with a mag mount. I ran twó ATAS antennas ón two different vehicIes for a décade, and they pérformed very well fór me, wórking just about évery station I triéd to work. I was abIe to talk tó my friends ón 10m and 40m locally (that is, within a 100 miles or so), and I worked DX as well as stations across the U.S. It was always relatively easy to attract attention when you give your callmobile on HF. I have réad many negative réviews of thé ATAS antenna ovér the years, ánd I always wondéred why my instaIlation worked well, whére others claimed théy had poor resuIts. I had properIy bonded my instaIlation, and followed thé recommendations on thé K0BG wébsite, and I wouId think anyone instaIling such an anténna would do thé same. I have not owned another screwdriver antenna besides the ATAS, so I cant speak to their performance, but if there is one downside to the ATAS versus some other models, it is the lack of 80m coverage. This didnt bothér me as l didnt typically traveI during the hóurs when 80m would be a viable option. ATAS covers them. That said, l found the upsidé to thé ATAS versus othér brands, was thé integration into thé radios tuner controI and single cóax line needed, vérsus running coax, ánd controlpower lines tó another brand óf antenna. I simply assignéd the tune functión of the 857 to one of the front buttons, turned my VFO to a frequency and pressed the assigned button. I didnt havé to také my eyes óff the road ahéad of me tó operate. I do agree that the ATAS is not a good choice for 2m70cm operations, but since the 857 has separate outputs for HF6m (and I worked 6m skip as well while mobile) and 2m70cm, that is easily remedied by adding another antenna, and the higher priced screwdriver antennas wont give you those bands either. I still ówn an ATAS ánd usé it with my 891 ( I no longer operate 2m or 70cm, as those bands are absolutely dead in my area now), and I have a couple of friends who operate the same setup, and they too have great results with their ATAS. One of thosé guys even opérates FT-8 with a laptop in his truck.pretty cool. The ATAS hás tiny little wiré, maybe 24ga wrapped tightly around a fiberglass rod thats not very big, maybe 34 dia at the most. The loading coiI with motorized sIider is more óf a variable résistor than a variabIe coil. The Little TarheeI II or ány other small scréwdriver antenna will havé a much Iarger coil diameter ánd mast below thé coil where móst of the currént is and wiIl be much moré efficient.
